How Long Does the Average Shoulder Replacement Last?

In terms of the implant, contemporary implants last around 15 to 20 years.

I believe 20-plus years is totally doable for the current implants, but we won’t know for 20 years. If you read some of the older data, surgeons will say 10 to 15 years, but that’s older implants, older types of surgeries, stuff that’s in the past. Because we’re measuring it now, 15 years ago, we made radical gains in every angle, like our techniques and implant designs.

The computer programs we use now minimize how much bone we take out, and we can hone that shoulder to customize it to your shoulder. There’s so much stuff that we’re doing now that we weren’t ten years ago. I think that it’s totally reasonable to last more than 20 years.

If you’re talking about surgery, most surgeons take about two hours in our practice because we are so specialized and do so many procedures. Our procedures take less than 30 minutes of actual surgical time. So, 30 minutes for the procedure, 20-plus years for the implant.
